No Mercy, by Sherrilyn Kenyon
When shape-shifter Dev Peltier crosses paths with Samia, a fierce immortal Amazon warrior, he realises he may have met his match. Live fast, fight hard and if you have to die then take as many of your enemies with you as you can. That is the Amazon credo and the words Sam has lived and died by. Now in her immortal life she is haunted by a past betrayal, her reason for becoming a Dark-Hunter and Dev is still feeling the loss of his mother, who was killed by his enemies, the Daimons. Now those enemies have a new found power that threatens their very existence and possibly the world. They have to pull together and fight hard if they want to survive and be together at the end of it.
No Mercy is book twenty-seven in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s popular Dark-Hunter series and possible the best one yet. It opens with the chance encounter of Dev and Sam at Sanctuary, the bar Dev’s family owns and a safe haven for Dark-Hunter. This is where their story begins. Throughout the book, they face the continuous threats from the Daimons, who now have the power to walk in daylight among other things and have to come to terms with their forbidden relationship.
As many of Kenyon’s fans, I was anxious to read this book, mainly because Dev steps up as the lead male. He has been featured as a minor character in a few of the other books and I was intrigued to know more about him. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I like his character even more than I thought I would after having read the book. He is the charming, strong, handsome hero type with the added bonus of being very funny. And Sam is no weak heroine either. She lives a life of anger caused by a past betrayal, trusting no one and having no weaknesses.
This book has a little of everything including romance, humour, fantasy and horror. Kenyon’s writing style really gives each character a unique personality which you can’t help but fall in love with. The relationship between the main characters, Dev and Sam, will have you laughing and crying, probably both at the same time. And as with the previous books you learn lots about each character featured in the story; not just the main characters. This set up helps to establish a character for a future book.
No Mercy is a brilliant, quick witted book and I eagerly look forward to the next instalment in the Dark-Hunter series! If you have not read anything from this series before then I would recommend starting with the first book, Fantasy Lover, and working your way through.
