Dark Peril, By Christine Feehan

By on September 16, 2010

Dark Peril is the twenty first book in Christine Feehan’s Dark series. Dominic – one of the most powerful Carpathian males – believing his existence is coming to an end, ingests vampire blood containing dangerous parasites in order to gain entrance to the vampire run laboratory and learn their plans. Thinking this is the most honourable way to end his life, he will get the information that is needed to save his race, report it to the Carpathian leader and go out fighting. One thing that he did not take into account was finding his lifemate, Solange Sangria, along the way.

One of the last Jaguar people, Solange has spent a long time alone, fighting to save her people from her Father, Brodrick the Terrible, who slaughtered her family. She is heading to her one last battle that she will surely not come out of alive. Then, at the end of their lives, they find each other unexpectedly.

Dark Peril opens with Dominic waking from another dream he has had about a lone Jaguar woman, a dream in which he believes he has invented the perfect lifemate for himself. She is a worrier, a strong loyal fighter, the perfect half to complete him. Later, he finds a lone Jaguar in the forest and soon realises this is his lifemate. And so their story begins.

Dark Peril is primarily a romance novel and focuses on the developing relationship between Dominic and Solange, as they learn to trust and rely on one another after both having been alone for so many years. Feehan is not afraid to go into detail about the struggles they face, from Solange having to fight her insecurities, feeling that she is not pretty or feminine enough for Dominic, to him having to learn how to step back and let Solange be the warrior woman that she is. The characters and the love between them feel very realistic and detailed.

Throughout the book, Dominic and Solange have to face the continuous threat from the vampires and Brodrick, who eventually discovers that Solange is not dead as he believed. Dark Peril follows the same format as the previous novels, a powerful Carpathian male finally finds his lifemate and must fight to stay with her, but nevertheless it is just as good, if not better, than the others. Feehan’s writing has a way of bringing her characters vividly to life and making the readers eagerly anticipating her next novel. Dark Peril can be read as a standalone novel, although characters from previous book are often mentioned and to fully understand the plot I would recommend starting from the beginning of the series with Dark Prince.
